BOWLING GREEN, KY. (June 15, 2020) – Kentucky earned the prestigious Silver Shovel Award for exceptional performance in economic development nationally. Each year, Area Development recognizes states for their achievements in attracting high-value investment projects that will create significant new jobs in their communities. Kentucky won the Silver Shovel Award in the 3 to 5 million population category in both 2019 and again in 2020. The state won the award due to the dedication of countless people comprising Team Kentucky who worked together to create over 2,600 jobs and bring in over $1.9 billion in investment across the state.
Bowling Green companies and the local economic development team contributed significantly to the state winning this award, as one of only two communities who had more than one Top 10 Project. Georgia-Pacific Consumer Operations’ $100 million expansion created 50 jobs and Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake’s expansion created 94 jobs and brought in $65.1 million in capital investment.
“We are proud of Georgia-Pacific and all of our businesses who have invested in our community and workforce. Their investments demonstrate their continued commitment to Warren County and the community’s future,” said Warren County Judge-Executive Michael Buchanon.
“Thanks to robust companies like Bendix, Bowling Green continues to be the fastest-growing city in Kentucky, and we are grateful for their commitment to our community,” said Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson.
The Georgia-Pacific and Bendix projects represent a notable portion of the jobs being created and investment being made in Bowling Green. In 2019, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce announced $376.6 million in capital investment in expanded and new targeted businesses that created 971 new jobs in Warren County. These jobs and investments will support roughly 1,400 other new jobs over the next ten years with the overall economic impact at nearly $2 billion over the next decade.
“We deeply appreciate the continued investment and job creation by our targeted businesses, as well as, the exceptional business climate made possible by our local elected officials and economic development teammates,” said Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ron Bunch. “Through this exceptional synergy, Warren County and Bowling Green continue to contribute to the nation leading economic development success in our community and in Kentucky."
In 2020, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce has closed two economic development projects totaling $150.3 million in capital investment and generating 141 new jobs for 2020. Bowling Green was recently recognized by Site Selection magazine as a top tier-2 metropolitan area in the United States and was ranked among the top 20 for 2018’s ‘Best Small Cities to Start a Business’ by Wallethub.com.
