This July, thanks to the generous support of Ball Corporation, the National Corvette Museum, and NCM Motorsports, 36 educators from Bowling Green Independent Schools, Butler County Schools, Warren County Public Schools, and the Green River Regional Education Cooperative participated in the Educator Externship events. These events are a crucial component of the SCK LAUNCH Talent Development Initiative, designed to bridge the gap between education and industry.
The Externship program allows teachers to immerse themselves in workplace environments, observing real-world applications of academic and employability skills. By experiencing these environments firsthand, educators gain contemporary insights into the skills required for today’s talent pipeline. This valuable experience enables them to integrate these skills into their classroom lessons and mentorship efforts, better preparing students for future success.
Beyond benefiting educators, the externships provide local businesses with a unique opportunity to play an active role in “growing their own” workforce. Companies collaborate with educators, offering insights and content that align with industry needs.
During their visits, educators toured the facilities and engaged in “day in the life” experiences, learning from professionals across a range of careers in manufacturing and tourism. They explored roles from museum curators to marketing experts, human resources professionals, finance managers, educators, professional drivers, engineers, safety managers, IT specialists, and more. This exposure provided educators with a comprehensive understanding of the diverse career paths available within these industries.
Educators left with valuable knowledge to bring back to their classrooms, enriched by the insights and experiences gained during the externships. They were impressed by the breadth of career opportunities and the critical importance of communication and customer service skills in any field.
One educator commented, “We all have an important role in making sure every student has the opportunity to explore multiple pathways to find a career that matches their interests, goals, and skills.” Another shared, “There are so many different career paths available in one place! Communication and customer service are key to teach our students.”
The visits offered educators a glimpse into the expectations, culture, and opportunities available to students in our region, highlighting the vital connection between education and industry.
