On March 11, 2026, the Leadership Bowling Green class spent a full day exploring the creative, cultural, and media institutions that help shape Bowling Green’s identity. Media & Arts Day offered an engaging look at how storytelling, history, and innovation come together to strengthen community connection and expression.

The day began at the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce with a welcome and overview led by Class Chair Kelsey Crowe, setting the stage for a day focused on collaboration and creativity. Participants also reflected on the principle of “Habit 6: Synergize,” reinforcing the importance of working together to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Understanding the Local Creative Landscape

The morning continued with a discussion on the history of Bowling Green’s media and arts scene, led by Telia Butler, Downtown Development Coordinator for the City of Bowling Green, and Julie Milam, Executive Vice President of Partnership Services for the Chamber. Their insights highlighted how the city’s cultural growth has been shaped by intentional partnerships, local investment, and a shared vision for a vibrant downtown.

The class then walked to The Capitol for a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the region’s premier performing arts venues. Led by Magnolia Gramling and Gretchen Mitchell, the experience provided a deeper understanding of how arts organizations operate and contribute to quality of life in South Central Kentucky.

Media in Action

Participants next visited WNKY, where Morning News Anchor Ashlee Quinn and General Manager Chad Duke offered an inside look at broadcast journalism. From newsroom operations to storytelling under tight deadlines, the visit showcased the fast-paced environment of local media and its critical role in keeping the community informed.

Following lunch provided by Mellow Mushroom, the group traveled to Western Kentucky University for an immersive look at student-led media and athletics communications. A tour of the WKU Fieldhouse, led by Senior Associate Athletic Director Les Forsythe, highlighted the intersection of sports, media, and fan engagement.

The experience continued with a WKU Media Panel moderated by Telia Butler, featuring student publication leaders including Clarissa Dean (Talisman), Jack McMahon (College Heights Herald), and Chuck Clark (Student Publications). The discussion emphasized the importance of emerging voices in journalism and the evolving landscape of media.

Honoring History Through the Arts

In the afternoon, the class explored the rich history of the Historic Shake Rag District, with a focus on landmarks such as the Southern Queen Hotel, George Washington Carver Center, and Shake Rag Bar & Lounge—each offering powerful stories about the neighborhood’s cultural and historical significance. While inclement weather shifted the experience from a planned walking tour to an indoor presentation at the Service One Union Pavilion, the session still provided meaningful insight into the district’s legacy and lasting impact on the community.

Creativity, Community, and Connection

The day concluded at White Squirrel Brewery with a mixology class and a unique book fair experience in partnership with the Warren County Public Library. This interactive session blended creativity with community engagement, showcasing how local businesses and organizations collaborate in unexpected and impactful ways.

Participants closed the day with reflection and class discussion, followed by an after-hours gathering to strengthen relationships and continue conversations sparked throughout the day.

Through immersive tours, candid discussions, and hands-on experiences, the Leadership Bowling Green Class of 2025–2026 gained a deeper appreciation for the individuals and organizations that bring Bowling Green’s media and arts scene to life. From preserving history to shaping modern storytelling, the day highlighted the powerful role creativity plays in building a connected and thriving community.
